Présentation

1840
The first public library was found by The Marshal (Mouchir) Ahmed Bey in the Zitouna ‘s Mosque. It was known by its sign out service.The historian Ahmed Ibn Abou Dhiaf was taken into charge of conservation by the Marshal His documents contained one of the largest Arab Manuscripts . His outcome were put in the NL under the name of « Al Ahmadia Library »Adding to that « Al Abdelia library » that Sultan Hafsid Abdallah Ben El Hassan has delievered to the Zitouna ‘s Mosquein early 6th century.
1885
The national library was required by the bey Ali Bacha III under the name of « French Library ». It was located then in the secondary school Alaouia in Tunis.
1910
The Library had been moved ta Attarine souk in a former Jannissaries ‘Turkich Barraks' in the Medina of Tunis.
1956
It rose to the status of Natonal Library following the country's independance.
1967
A Presedential order had enabled the Library to collect the Arab – Islamic Manuscripts from all Tunisian libraries
1975
The press Law was promulgated , so that The National Library became the only legal repository for intellectual production
1976
The National Library started serving the International Standard Serial Number(ISSN) which is used to identify newspapers, magazines, journals and periodicals of all kinds and all media-print and electronic
1988
The Natonal Library started serving the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) which is a system to enhance efficiency of material information and bibliographic distribution by establishing and identifying one title or edition of a title from one specefic publisher.
1992
Al Khaldounia Library was included with the National Library.
1994
An administrative and financial management has been arranged for the National Library and its coverage

The digitization experiment began with the National Library.

The promulgation of the organic law n°37 which regulates the registration and legal deposit conditions and procedures.

A children’s Reading Room (Ali Bebo) and a Reading Room (Louis Braille) have ben established.
