Introduction
The National Library of Tunisia is an administrative public institution, under the supervision of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. By statute, its budget is attached to the national state budget. This digital platform contains our general site,online catalogue, digital library, youth space and the Museum of Written Heritage.

1840
Marshal Ahmed Bey establishes the first public library as part of the Zeituna Mosque, offering lending services. He appoints Ahmad Ibn Abi Dhiaf, a historian, as the library’s custodian.The library’s contents will come to be known as the Ahmadia Collection and will account for a substantial part of the Arabic manuscript holdings of the National Library, along with the Abdelliyya Collection, created as a trust-fund within the Zeituna Mosque by the Hafsid Sultan Abu Abdallah Mohamed Ibn Hasan in the early 16th century.
1885
The National Library, as we know it, was established as part of an edict by Bey Ali Pacha III, and was then called the French Library. At this time it was housed in the Alaoui College in Tunis.
1910
The library was transferred to an old janissary barracks in Souk El Attarine in the Medina of Tunis.
1956
Upon Tunisian independence from France, the library becomes the National Library.
1967
A Presidential Decree entrusts the library with the gathering of valuable Arabic-Islamic manuscripts from Tunisian libraries, mausoleums, and mosques.
1975
A new Press Code provides that the National Library is an essential entity in the legal deposit of national intellectual production.
1976
The Library assigns International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSN) to the collection.
1988
The Library assigns International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN) to the collection.
1992
Le fonds de la Bibliothèque Al Khaldounia ainsi que son bâtiment ont été annexés à la Bibliothèque Nationale.
1994
Promulgation d’un décret pour la réglementation administrative et financière de la Bibliothèque Nationale, ainsi que la détermination de ses attributions et des modes de sa gestion.
2005
Elle s’est établie dans son local actuel, Boulevard du 9 avril.
2005
La mise en place du système d’information.
2015
Promulgation de la loi fondamentale n° 37 relative à l’enregistrement et au dépôt légal, ainsi qu’aux procédures.
2016
Création d’une salle de lecture pour les enfants (Alia Babou) et d’une salle de lecture pour les non-voyants (Louis Braille).
2016
Restauration et ouverture au public de la Bibliothèque Al Khaldounya.
2017
Démarrage du moissonnage du web tunisien et de l’archivage du patrimoine numérique.
2017
Promulgation d’un décret gouvernemental ( n ° 2017-1402 du 19 décembre 2017) relatif à l’organisation administrative et financière de la bibliothèque. Le nouvel organigramme comprend une nouvelle direction de l’informatique.
2017
Lancement du projet de numérisation du patrimoine écrit et de la Bibliothèque numérique, désignée par Khaldouniya numérique.
2020
Lancement du projet du Musée du patrimoine Ecrit.
2021
Elargissement de la salle de lecture pour enfants qui est devenue un espace jeunesse.

Mise en ligne de la nouvelle plateforme numérique, incluant une bibliothèque virtuelle « Khaldouniya numérique »
