The National Library, as bibliography agency, accomplishes the following objectives:
· Collection of material
· Circulate bibliographical data
· Assign ISBN and ISSN
ISBN agency
ISBN is the 13 digit standardized international numbering system. The objectives of assigning ISBN numbers include:
· To track the local production of monographs on a national and international scale by assigning a unique identifier to each new title;
· To facilitate efficient and rapid communication between publishers, distributers, and bibliographical units;
· To simplify computer processing by using a standardized code.
Prefixes for publishers are allocated by the National Agency for ISBN, which is housed in the department of documentation and information at the National Library of Tunisia.

ISSN national center
ISSN is the 8 digit standardized international numbering system for serials. The ISSN is given to the publisher by the National Center of Serials Registration at the National Library for the following purposes:
· To track local periodicals on national and international level;
· To permit the rapid exchange of information between publishers, distributers, and bibliographical units;
· To standardize collective catalogs.
